| The Basics |
| Hello everyone - My name is Tina and I am an Usborne Books @ Home consultant. Recently my business has developed a focus on Family Literacy. The last year I have been been working to set up a Literacy Program for the Food Bank here in Nebraska. It's slow going, but everyone I've spoken to has been so excited about the potential this program has. We are mainly working with families that cannot afford to provide books & reading material for their families - it's hard enough putting food on the table & a roof over their heads! "The possibilities for a child who can read are infinite. The limitations for a child who cannot read are limitless." Poverty & illiteracy are related - they are the parents of desperation & imprisonment: - Inmates are twice as likely to be ranked in the bottom levels of literacy as is the general population. - 60% of inmates are illiterate. - Children who have not developed some basic literacy skills by the time they enter school are 3-4 times more likely to drop out in later years. 82% of inmates are repeat offenders. What can you do to change this? Read to your child a minimum of 20 minutes per day. For more information, please go to: http://greatbooks4kids.wordpress.com/ (this is a new blog, so please bear with me as I learn this new skill - lots of reading involved!)

|
30 years of success
Usborne has grown into one of the world's leading children's book publishers, with translations in almost ninety languages and masses of awards.
The remarkable success of Usborne derives from the simple idea that it is possible, without any sacrifice of quality, to produce books as interesting and entertaining as television, magazines and comics -- media which children instinctively prefer.

"I love Usborne Books! I use Usborne Internet-Linked books all the time in the classroom. They save me time finding relative web sites and the kids really respond to these books. I use them at home with my own children, too, and give them as gifts. One of the best gifts you can give a child is a book, especially an Usborne Book." Cameron McKinley, 2006-2007 Alabama Teacher of the Year
"It is perfectly possible to create an entire K-12 curriculum with nothing more than Usborne Books, an encyclopedia, and your friendly local public library. Whats more, you wont have to force your children to read these books!" Mary Pride, homeschooling expert

| Our Charities |
Usborne has several programs to promote literacy in schools, homes, and the community.
Reach for the Stars creates a win/win situation for everyone involved! Kids are rewarded with brand-new, high-quality Usborne Books for reading, and the organization gets free books, too! Altogether 120% of pledge money in books! Schools, libraries, home school groups, preschools, daycares, and children's clubs are just a few of the groups who can benefit from this great program! Even toddlers can take part by being read to--this teaches parents the importance of literacy in the home!
No-Fuss Book Fairs can be held by nearly any organization, home school group, school, library, or charity! Earn either 25% and 50% of sales in free books! A great plus--on-line fairs allow distant friends and relatives to participate!
Usborne is dedicated to putting captivating books into the hands of kids. Ownership of at least 25 books is a key indicator of future literacy, according to the National Education Council. Kids who love to read love to learn, and kids who love to learn are more likely to go to college and earn more. Your organization can make a lasting difference in the life of a child
Great information on literacy is on the International Reading Association's web site. |
